Baptism

If you would like to be baptized or have your son or daughter baptized, please contact the church office at 703-938-8700 to speak with the pastor. The sacrament of baptism is conducted during the 8:45am or 11:00am Worship Services on Sunday. It is not an individual event, but part of our worship as Christians. An appropriate Sunday will be scheduled and an appointment will be made with the pastor for a 30-45 minute meeting to discuss the meaning of baptism.

Baptism is a sacrament is a means of God’s grace and sign of our faith. Our baptism liturgy states: “Dearly Beloved, Baptism is an outward and visible sign of the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whose grace we become heirs of life eternal. Those receiving this sacrament are initiated into the fellowship of Christ’s Holy Church. Just as in physical birth, the human family begins again; so in spiritual birth, the Christian family begins again.”

Those are baptized are marked by the sign of the cross as new members of Christ’s Holy church. Children are welcome for our Lord said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” (Mark 10:14)

There are three ways to baptize, sprinkling, pouring, and immersion. We at Wesley UMC use sprinkling.

Baptism is not the end, but the beginning of a journey of faith nurtured by a loving family and the church community.
