Christian tradition specially observe the week before Easter Sunday, as it is the Sunday we remember Jesus’ suffering and death, as well as his resurrection to come. This year, Wesley is making a joint effort with the neighboring churches, to make the Holy Week more worshipful and meaningful experience. Please refer to the below plan for various services and join us in the special observance of the week. Many Lenten blessings to you and your family!
April 18, Maundy Thursday: Living Last Supper
Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church at 7:30 pm
(Located at 1301 Trap Road, Vienna, VA)
Maundy Thursday is the day we celebrate Jesus’ sharing of the Last Supper with his disciples, and the washing of their feet at the end of the meal. At Andrew Chapel UMC, we are having a communion service with Living Last Supper performed by the members of community.
April 19, Good Friday: Tenebrae Service
Wesley United Methodist Church at 7:00 pm
(Located at 711 Spring Street SE, Vienna, VA)
Tenebrae means “Darkness.” In this service, we meditatively listen to the story of Jesus’ suffering, by extinguishing candles throughout the readings. By the end of the service, the worship space will remain in darkness, signifying the world’s loss of the Light of the World (one way the Bible identifies Jesus).
April 20, Holy Saturday: Easter Vigil
Epiphany United Methodist Church at 7:00 pm
(Located at 1014 Country Club Drive NE, Vienna, VA)
In the evening prior to the Easter Sunday, we gather in a prayer meeting, outside if weather would permit, with our anticipation of the good news on Easter morning. After the service, also weather permitted, we will have the roasting of marshmallows, in celebration of what Jesus was going to do after resurrection—he grilled fish with the disciples.
